Vadia Curry Recipe – Sid Dish for Idli and Dosa

Vadai Curry Recipe:

Ingredients: For Vadai:

  • 1 cup urad dal
  • 1/4 cup rice flour
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

For Curry:

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish


For Vadai:

  1. Soak the urad dal in water for at least 2 hours.
  2. Drain the water from the urad dal and grind it in a food processor to form a thick paste.
  3. Add rice flour, ginger, green chili, cumin seeds, and salt to the paste. Mix well to form a dough.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan on medium heat.
  5. Wet your hands with water and take a small portion of the dough, roll it into a ball, and flatten it slightly.
  6. Make a hole in the center of the flattened ball to form a donut shape.
  7. Carefully place the vadais in the hot oil and fry them until they turn golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain the excess oil.

For Curry:

  1. In a mixer, grind the grated coconut to form a fine paste.
  2. In a pan, heat a little oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  3. Once the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they turn soft.
  5. Add the coconut paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt to the pan. Mix well.
  6. Add water to the pan and let the curry come to a boil.
  7. Once the curry starts to boil, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Add the fried vadais to the curry and let them simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
  9. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with Idli or Dosa.

Note: You can adjust the consistency of the curry by adding more or less water.
